Another meme, ganked from [livejournal.com profile] prettyquotable this time.

Name a fandom, and I'll give you the scoop on at least three of my unpopular opinions related to that fandom.

To be honest, I'm not sure what unpopular opinions I actually HAVE because I never really think about it that way. I'd say the possible fandoms to request are: Doctor Who, Supernatural, Heroes, Star Trek, Star Wars, Batman, BSG, X-files, Farscape, Lexx, Xena, James Bond...or pretty much anything else I've watched in the last 15 years.

Hit me! I'm probably more curious about what my answers will be than you are. ;-)

ETA. The responses may contain spoilers!

James Bond!

Wheeeeee!!! (Again, I don't know how unpopular these opinions are, but they are mine and I've certainly seen plenty of people disagree with me on them)

(1) While I fully agree that the Daniel Craig version of Bond is necessary and brilliant and the closest they've ever come to Flemings original concept, I looooooooooooooooooove Brosnan's Bond and always will. Goldeneye is one of the all-time greatest Bond films.

(2) I think Goldfinger is my least favorite Connery!Bond film. I recognize that it is super popular and that fandom (and the larger audience) consider it the quintessential C!Bond film, but I think From Russia with Love and Thunderball were WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better.

(3) I don't think Bond was ever a shallow, womanizing man-whore. Connery's Bond was too cold and driven for that, he merely enjoyed women as a way to feel something for a moment and did love some of them (to the extent he could love anyone). Then, after On Her Majesty's Secret Service he became a different man. I think Alec Traveleyn hit the nail on the head when he said:

"I might as well ask you if all those vodka martinis ever silence the screams of all the men you've killed... or if you find forgiveness in the arms of all those willing women for all the dead ones you failed to protect."

IMO, that is the very heart of who James Bond is, and I think that Moore's portrayal of Bond was at its weakest when he forgot that part of the character.

My favourite Bond is Dalton (even though his movies were crap), and my favourite Doctor is Nine. I am destined to go against the flow!

I liked Dalton quite a bit. Moreso in hindsight. There really isn't a single Bond actor I didn't like. They all had their positives and negatives, and a lot of the negatives had more to do with the storytelling than the actors.

Dalton, to me, was the Bond of the books; Craig is the Bond that would be written today. I can agree that Sean Connery is a kind of classic figure, but I find him so repellent (see above, plus he hits women and thinks it's okay) that it's really hard for me to care about him. At least Moore didn't take himself too seriously, which I always appreciate.

I would love for CE to play a Bond villain opposite Daniel Craig - DC could get that homoerotic subtext he's been wishing for, and we already know they can bring it!

Oh my fucking god. I think you just broke my brain. That would...I'm speechless. I wish the universe loved me enough to make this happen.

You are killing me. No, I haven't. I've actually never heard of it. Was CE in it?

CE and DC as childhood friends whose lives keep crossing over 30 years.

Actually, CE was supposed to play Geordie, DC's character, but he lobbied to get the more complicated part, Nicky, and when he won that argument (thank God, he was brilliant beyond belief as Nicky, even though he was not at the technical level he is now), they then had to hire someone else and DC got his big break.

They had really wonderful chemistry. This scene is hysterical, and the photos give you a bit of a sense of it.

You sure these are unpopular? Because I agree with all three of them. Brosnan!Bond was my first Bond, as much as I disliked his last few pictures I really, intensely loved GoldenEye. (Although Sean Bean had a lot to do with it too.) And while I liked Goldfinger, I'd hardly call it the best Connery!Bond ever. And 3...yes. That's it exactly. That's one of the things that I thought Craig!Bond got so right.

I don't really know, but I do know that they aren't generally accepted Bond facts.

Because I agree with all three of them.

But then I always knew the people on my flist were smarter than your average bear. ;-)
