Old Skool Who Recs.

It would appear I have been quite remiss in keeping up with my fic rec duties, so I am going to rectify that with some kick ass classic Doctor Who stories. After devouring everything Second Doctor-related that I could get my obsessive little hands on, I decided to branch out and watch a little Seventh Doctor. And, me being me, of course I got hooked. So, after watching every episode with Seven/Ace, I moved on to reading every single Seventh Doctor story in the Teaspoon and an Open Mind archive. In order to save you the time, I a going to share with you the links to my most favorite.
But first, here are a few stories with random old skool Who pairings that you must read:
Sweet Are the Uses by
bagheera_san (Three/Delgado!Master) R
I can't begin to tell you how awesome this story is. It deals so beautifully with the incredibly complex relationship between the Doctor and the Master, and their equally complex relationship with the Time Lords. SO GOOD.
Dating in the Workplace by Paranoid Seat
(Multi-Doctor/Multi-Companion + Captain Jack) R (not explicit)
If anyone had asked the Doctor whether he begrudged his companions their interpersonal relationships, he would’ve denied it strenuously, with much hand-waving and/or babbling. Because it was true! For the most part.
This is so damn funny it's absurd. No matter how many times I read it, I can't help laughing. If you have any trouble figuring out the pairings, check the reviews. The author lists them there.
The History of the Kings of Britain by Livii
(Brigadier Bambera/Ancelyn) PG
This is absolutely what happened to these characters after the end of Curse of Fenric. The voices are spot-on and the story is hilarious. This is now my personal canon.
Ok. Moving along to the Seven/Ace stories. These are not all shippy, so if that's not your thing do not despair. I'll make it clear in the descriptions.
Lost Luggage and Lost Souls by Nemo the Everbeing (Seven, Ace) PG
This is, hands down, my favorite Seventh Doctor story. This author is amazing, and I'm going to rec each of her stories individually, but this one absolutely blew me away. The Doctor and Ace get caught up in a crime that doesn't concern them, to incredibly tense and dramatic results. I was on the edge of my seat reading this one.
...Who Burned Like Starfire by Nemo the Everbeing.
(Seven/Ace) G
A breathtaking short story wherein the Doctor gives Ace an unexpected birthday gift. This piece contains one of the most beautiful descriptions of the Doctor I've ever read.
Falls the Shadow by Nemo the Everbeing
(Seven/Ace) PG-13
One of two longer, plottier stories by this author, both of which are fabulous. Author's Description: It was supposed to be nothing more than a seaside holiday for two old friends to relax and recharge, but something went wrong. Then a lot of things went wrong. Now, as Ace deals with the emotional fallout of a realization that could put an end their decade-long friendship, the Doctor discovers something potentially deadly about the world on which they’ve stopped. And then the darkness falls.
The Monster in the Dark by Nemo the Everbeing (Seven, Ace) PG-13
Some things must be dealt with, and Ace put off dealing with the cheetah virus until it was almost too late. The Doctor must enlist some unconventional and unwanted help to pull her through.
Takes place in the aftermath of Survival and features the Master. Another excellent piece of work.
The Widening Gyre by
srichard (Seven/Ace) R
Ace goes to the Academy on Gallifrey; seeds of change have been sown, and neither Gallifrey nor Ace's relationship with the Doctor will remain the same.
I absolutely adore this story. The author does such an amazing job of capturing the voices of the characters and painting a vivid picture of life on Gallifrey. I think this is my favorite overtly shippy Seven/Ace piece. Highly, highly recommended if you are a fan of the pairing.
And finally, Second Doctor recs because the Second Doctor is the best Doctor and I shall always do what I can to make everyone understand this as trufax:
(I have recced some of these before in my Massive Two Pimp Post but they are worth reccing again just in case anyone missed them the first time.)
The Bet by
lithrael (Two/Jamie/Zoe) NC-17
Holy. Shit. I cant even BEGIN to describe how hot and awesome this is. Not only is lithrael amazing at pr0n, but her characterizations and language are just gorgeous. This story has one of my favorite passages of all time:
Zoe's heart was steady but her knees had gone slightly weak. They always did, over the Doctor. He was just too amazing. It was like having a crush on the whole night sky, and one day finding it could love you back.
It just kills me dead.
Reflections by
vandonovan (Two/Jamie) NC-17
Author’s summary: Charged with saving the universe, can the Doctor overcome his own darkness to defeat the Daleks?
THE quintessential Second Doctor era work. This story blows me away. It’s an AU that takes place after Evil of the Daleks but I honestly don’t think you need to have seen that serial to appreciate this story. Van does a beautiful job setting the scene. It’s long and intricate and the characterizations are perfect and the storyline is magnificent and I can’t possibly recommend this piece more highly. Absolute brilliance. READ THIS IMMEDIATELY.
Make Her Some Great Princess, Six Feet High by
livii (Zoe/Victoria) PG
Beautiful written, melancholy, and really touching. Takes place during Mind Robbers. Zoe lends Victoria some of her strength.
Heights by
calapine (Two/Jamie) G
This is just completely and utterly THEM in every possible way. Even in a totally G-rated story it's obvious that they are soul mates. ;-) Hilarious and perfect. ::happy sigh::
Watching by
pet_lunatic (Two/Jamie implied) R-ish
The Doctor catches Jamie in a...private moment.
Obsessions by
vandonovan (Two/Jamie) NC-17
Cliche-fic done SO right. Hot as hell.
A Moment's Grace by
cesario
(Two, Martha Jones) PG-13
An absolutely beautiful story that takes place during the year that Martha traveled the Earth in Last of the Time Lords.
Soft Touch by
vandonovan (Nine/Jamie) R
Short but SOOOOOOO awesome. Jamie easing Nine’s pain.
Visiting Hours by
sushigal007 (Ten, Jamie) PG
While Ten and Martha are stuck in the 60’s during Blink, the Doctor decides to visit an old friend.
I hope you enjoy these, and please let the authors know if you do. I have it on good authority that they love feedback. Plus, I think we need to support old skool Who writers in a serious way so they will keep giving us the goods. ;-)
