Top 5s (Part 2)

So,
livii wants to know:
Top five moments you'd use to try to convince someone of why the Sixth Doctor rocks.
And even though I know she isn't going to believe a SINGLE WORD I SAY, I'm going to tell her anyway. :-P
(Of course these are all going to be audio moments, because even I can admit the serials were pretty crap.)
1) The entirety of The One Doctor. Seriously. From the opening moments when he is on a power trip beating Mel at Monopoly, through his complete and utter indignation that such a pathetic con-man would DARE to pass himself off as the Doctor. Right through to the end when he makes out with Sally-Anne. It is magnificence in audio form.
2) Two choices from Year of the Pig. The scene where he gets drunk on Port and picks a fight with Marcel Proust. Or the scene in Toby's hotel room that begins with him waking up in Toby's "second best bed" and ends with him jumping off the balcony.
3) And now, here's a bit of a controversial one. The ending of Arrangements for War. The total despondent breakdown he has when he can't save everyone makes me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME. I know a lot of people find his comments about Evelyn OTT, but I don't agree. Personally, I think it's VERY clear from his audios with her that Evelyn was one of the companions who had the most profound impact on him as a person. That doesn't mean he didn't love all his companions in his own way. But for me, Evelyn is on the list with Jamie, Jo Grant, Nyssa, Ace, Benny, Fitz, Charley and I suppose Rose that he really and truly connected with in a way that he didn't with a lot of the others. And that's OK.
4) For something completely NON-controversial, we have the scene in ...ish where he is trying to make Peri understand why the English language is his one true love. ;-)
Six: "It's ENGLISH! The language of Chaucer!"
Peri: "Chaucer???"
Six: "Well...of Shakespeare."
Peri: "Shakespeare???"
Six: "Of ME!"
5) Finally, we have the scene in Apocalypse Element where he loses his shit and tries to make Evelyn understand the profound nature of what the Daleks were doing and what it meant to the universe as a whole. Baker is magnificent in that scene. SO overwhelmed and terrified and heart-sick and just...wow. LOVE.
Also,
niffler09 wants me to rec some new music. She asked for my top 5 songs, but I don't ever listen to singles. I'm an album girl. So I'm gonna list the 5 albums I've been listening to like crazy lately (I'll also point out a few stand-out tracks for each).
I'll to link to sites where you can hear samples
1) Anja Garbarek - Briefly Shaking
I love all three of her cds, but this one is knocking my socks off. I've been listening to it on repeat for days now. Her voice is amazing, and the songs are so complex that every time you hear them you find something new. Standout tracks are Shock Activities, My fellow riders, and This Momentous Day.
2) Wallen - Miséricorde
I think the French do R&B better than anyone else on Earth. I don't understand much of the language, but I don't care. I tend to listen to a shit ton of non-english language music because language is beautiful. Anyway, this is her best cd. It's magnificent. Standout tracks are Dites Au Desespoir, Business, and Yamahogonie.
3) Tricky - Knowle West Boy
This is an interesting one. It certainly doesn't reach the brilliant heights of Maxinquaye. Nor is it as accessible as Blowback. But I think it's excellent in its own right. Standout tracks are Joseph, Past Mistake, and Cross to Bear.
4) Martina Topley-Bird - The Blue God
Her voice makes gives me chills. I wish she was more prolific, but this second solo offering does NOT disappoint. Not quite as good as Quixotic, but still fabulous. Standout tracks are Phoenix, Something to Say, and Yesterday.
5) Uh huh her - Common Reaction
Total throwback to like the Sundays and that kind of music, but I love this album so much it hurts me. Maybe BECAUSE it's such a throwback. Standout tracks are Explode, Common Reaction, and Covered
Hope at least one of those is something you might like!

on 2009-08-21 07:46 pm (UTC)Were you an 8th Doctor fan? If so, I highly recommend Six's audios with Charley. Aside from The Doomwood Curse which I can't stand, they are some of the best stuff he's done.

on 2009-08-21 07:45 pm (UTC)(And I would argue in favor of at least Mark of the Rani as being Really Entertaining Television, but, you know. That's not so much an awesome Six story as an awesome How Many Really Very Large Personalities Can We Get Onscreen Simultaneously story.)

on 2009-08-21 07:47 pm (UTC)And I have to watch Rani again. If only for the reason you just stated. Now that I love him, I might have a different take on it.

on 2009-08-21 08:08 pm (UTC)But. The fact alone that Kate O'Mara wasn't actually supposed to knee Ainley in the crotch..

on 2009-08-21 08:32 pm (UTC)And YES. You are far behind. DI Menzies is a recurring character in The Condemned and The Raincloud Man and I am fucking obsessed with her. I want her in the TARDIS so badly it physically pains me. You must listen to those.

on 2009-08-21 08:48 pm (UTC)Seriously, I like your taste in music, there wasn't a single suggested artist/song that I didn't like. My favourites were Uh huh her and Tricky and there really is something about that French band O.o Many thanks for all these nice recs!

on 2009-08-22 03:29 am (UTC)And I love The One Doctor. And Pirates!

on 2009-08-22 02:51 pm (UTC)And yet, I am also SO pleased. Who ever thought it could happen??? I don't like the Sixth Doctor on tv. It's true. I love him in the audios. I even love Peri and Mel in the audios. For me, Big Finish IS Doctor Who. And if you already love 2 of Six's audios, then I think my work here is done. \o/
