Doctor Who and Torchwood
Jul. 4th, 2007 03:15 pmIn honor of the Doctor Who series 3 finale, and the amazing squeeworthy next season of Torchwood news that I heard from
poisontaster yesterday...
I bring some Doctor Who and Torchwood fic recs. I have to preface this by saying:
1) I don't actually read very much in this fandom (and I've been really crap at bookmarking the stuff I like), but I'm gonna share what I've got;
2) Nine is, and will always be, my favorite Doctor and I think Chris Eccleston is sex on a stick;
3) Nine/Rose/Jack is my OT3 for the ages; and
4) I enjoy the shit out of Torchwood.
So, without further ado
I'll start here with my single favorite Doctor Who story. It's pretty much gen, with a slight hint of pre-9/R/J
A Phantom of Clouds by Doyle.
Beautiful and heartbreaking and perfect. Oh, Nine.
And moving right along to some other gen stories:
Live for Me, Die for Me by EstelWolfe
This story deals with Jack's immortality in such a horrific and heartbreaking way. His love for the Doctor and Rose, his longing for them. As an added bonus it also deals with the TW team's love for Jack. Just gorgeous and makes me cry every time.
Scraping by mllelaurel
My favorite post-Cyberwoman story, with Jack and Ianto coming to something of a understanding.
Shadowed by Saganami Dreams
A short, dark piece in which Rose is taken prisoner and eventually saved by the Doctor and Jack. But the story isn't really about that, it's about Rose healing the lost parts of herself. There is no dialogue, just beautifully written descriptions of pain and recovery. Really well done.
Five Times Technology Has Endangered Torchwood by
entangled_now
Absolutely hilarious story that is exactly as advertised.
And now, on to the porn! \o/
This series is absolutely the hottest 9/R/J I've ever read. I love it desperately and have re-read it more times than I'd care to admit. It begins with:
Baiting by
lizbetann
and continues here with:
Let the Good Times Roll
and
Frustration
(which I think is definitely the weakest chapter in the series but is worth reading because it leads into the hottest part EVER)
which is
Making Amends
all by
diannelamerc
I also bring you some Ianto/Owen stories because that is my bizarro favorite pairing for Torchwood:
Another excellent story by
entangled_now who I actually recommend highly for all her Torchwood work.
Those Left Behind
With Jack gone they are all just trying to hold Torchwood and themselves together. SO hot.
There is also:
Waiting For Jack by
pinkamethyst which also explores how the team deals with Jack's absence after the finale.
Part One
(Ianto/Owen)
and
Part Two
(Gwen/Toshiko)
And finally my favorite Ianto/Owen series. It's written by
paperclipbitch and starts with "Here." You can find links for all parts in the series from the final part:

As always, I'll bring more recs for this fandom when I find more excellent fic.

on 2007-07-07 05:12 am (UTC)*I hope you don't mind me stalking you a little?*
So when I started watching DW was in S1 of the new series. I didn't want to watch it as I hate scifi (as in thing in space, right, yes, you can see that's not true, but this is the point of discussing my relationship here). My husband was obsessed with DW since his earliest days as a judgmental scifi hag who looks down on fandom and all else such things like true old skool geeks do. Anyway, so he forced me to watch the first couple of episodes of S1. I lived in Canada then, so I got it way before the States and I didn't know it would eventually turn into a whole sploogfest because Jack is gay and fandom will watch anything for the gay.
I was totally taken in by the show in a way that I can't even describe. The chavness of Rose, Chris' delivery and edge, Jackie's total campness, daleks. I was totally in love.
DW was my gateway drug into scifi. I eventually watched Firefly, which I had totally not ever seen an episode of even though my first fandom was Buffy, and all down hill from there until now I writer STARGATE FIC. It's amazing.
Anyway, my point was about your Nine manifesto. I really felt that way myself. When I knew Nine was going to bite it at the end of S1 (because of the fucking Star or something), I was livid. HOW HOW could they do this? *wails and moans* I was so attached I said "not watching anymore!" My husband said "we'll see." Yes. Well. WHO CRIED WHEN ROSE DIED? HIM! It was pathetic all around, really.
I didn't expect to like Ten or any replacement Companions. Now that I love Ten and Martha, I feel like a real DW fan, all "who's next, YAY!" and "Martha is the best companion, screw this noise!". It's sort of like joining a secret society.
Fangirls sort of ruin everything, though. God, my fl has been the pit of hell the last week.
Anyway, thanks for the recs.

on 2007-07-07 05:48 am (UTC)Nah. I kinda love it. ;-)

Yes, yes, YES! I also resisted the Who. I've been a scifi fan my whole life, but never knew much about DW and the people who were into it seemed to be very much apart from the trekkies and star wars geeks that made up my fandom world back then. The only thing that inspired me to watch it was Chris. I've loved him since Shallow Grave and I figured what the hell. It might suck, but I'd still be getting a weekly dose of Eccleston. (As a side note, I thank him from getting me into Heroes as well. If he hadn't guested I never would have started watching).
So, I watched the first 2 Who eps and was completely knocked on my ass by how much I loved it. Him, really. I know it's become a fandom cliche, but he really did have me at "run!". I just...everything about him was magical. And I fell in love with Rose and Jackie too. When Chris left I stuck with it for Rose and through her I came to accept Ten.
I didn't expect to like Ten or any replacement Companions.
Yup. I really thought I would be done with it after Nine, but Rose kept me involved and Ten has grown on me. I'll never have the same devotion to him that I had (have) for Nine, (Tennant is just a little too "fanboy playing Doctor" for me and I don't find him particularly attractive) but I still love the show with my whole heart. And Martha ROCKS.
As for the fandom, though. Nuh uh. Those people are NUTTERS. And considering the rather high baseline insanity of all fandoms everywhere, that's really saying something. Which is why I haven't ever read that much Who fiction. I hope you enjoy the links here, but I know there must be tons of other amazing fic for these shows that I just haven't discovered yet. Maybe someday.

on 2007-07-07 05:55 am (UTC)Anyway, I feel the same way about Nine. I have trouble watching his episodes now because I was SO crushed when he left that I just about gave up the ghost. I ALSO love him from SG! I am pleased you decided to randomly comment to me.
Also, did you study philo in college?

on 2007-07-07 06:18 pm (UTC)As for college, no. I was actually a women's studies major. I took a lot of feminist legal theory and critical race theory courses. That's probably what led me to law school. I was always a lot more interested in legal theory than in practice. So, I don't have a great deal of knowledge about more classical philosophy, but I sure as hell know a lot about wank. ;-)
