Ok. So, I am in the middle of an unexpected Fifth Doctor audio marathon and am loving the HELL out of him. The bitchier he gets, the better. Right now I'm listening to The Gathering and absolutely laughing my ass off. I've never been particularly convinced by Five/Tegan (I prefer Five with Nyssa or Turlough) but holy shit this clip is too fabulous for words.

What clip is that, you ask? It's Five and Tegan's ex-boyfriend having a bitch fight over her. Yes, you read that right. It's honestly even better than you can imagine.

Fivey's quite the bitchy ex...

It's the end that really gets me. They are seriously dick measuring over CARS!!! Oh, Five. Never change.

"Reeeally, how fascinating. Does it travel in time?" Ha!

Five was my first audio Doctor. The ones I keep going back to listen to over again are The Kingmaker, Omega, Singularity and Bride of Peladon, among others. Oh, and I love Erimem and Peri, though Five and Nyssa have some fantastic stories (particularly Creatures of Beauty which people either love or hate, and which I love, and of course Spare Parts).

I love Five too, but I don't usually listen to so much of him at once because I'm not as much of a fan of the Peri/Erimem audios. And I agree, Creatures of Beauty and Spare Parts are 2 of my favorite audios of any Doctor. They are just too painful to listen to too often.

AHAHAHAHA. He's being so cool and casual about it. XD God, Five is so pissy. I don't understand how people miss it.

I would, however, argue that stable is exactly what Tegan does seem to want. But, you know, it's not like I expect the Doctor not to be a denial-seeped liar.

And I started listening to Spare Parts again. It's...for something so bleak, it's really fucking funny. "A Doctor, eh? Public or private?"/"That's between me and my patients."/"Private then."/"Very possibly."

Me neither! When people refer to him as nice or passive or whatever it boggles my mind. He is SOOOOOO pissy. It's what makes me love him!

Totally. When I re-listen I usually just stop before the end because that's too painful. But the rest is completely splendid. Funny and exciting and so well written.

He SO is. The Gathering isn't the greatest audio, but the Five/Tegan stuff is gorgeous. A really beautiful (and hilarious) ending for them.

Can you make some Five audio recommendations? I'd love to know what the best Five fans are listening to :)

Eek! That's a tough call and I bet others will disagree with my recs. All I can do is tell you my favorites. Do you have a preferred companion? The Turlough ones are all good, and I think Nyssa is his best audio companion. My favorites are Spare Parts and Creatures of Beauty, but those are both VERY dark and tragic. For sheer fun (and relaxed relistening) I like Exotron, Three's a Crowd, and The Mind's Eye.

I know a lot of other people LOVE the Kingmaker, but it's not one of my favorites. Oh, and The Game is also pretty good.

Does that help?

I'd like to find some good audios with Nyssa. I have the first, oh, 37 audios and though I haven't listened to all of them, I have yet to come across a Nyssa story that made me go wow.

I do have Spare Parts and haven't listened to it yet.

Did love "Loups Garoux" though.

So ... any others? Early or late?

I loved Loups Garoux. I'd KILL for more Turlough audios. And I agree, the early Nyssa ones weren't that spectacular, it took a while for Five to really start getting good scripts. Spare Parts is magnificent. I think most would agree it's one of the best audios there is. If you enjoy the Peri/Erimem dynamic, then you'll find some good stuff there. For Nyssa, it seems they get better and better (with the exception of Renaissance of the Daleks which suffered from terrible guest actors (REALLY bad). Circular Time is also a really quality Nyssa audio.

PRIMEVAL. One of my favorites period, and my favorite of both Five and Nyssa's respectively. But, really, everything between that and Circular Time are really great. I'm kind of easy, though, and am rather fond of the ones before them as well.

Oh, shit. Why do I always forget that one?! It's fabulous!

ETA. I decided to re-listen to this one since you reminded me and now I remember why I don't go back to it very often. The Trakkenites are SO repugnant. I find this audio hard to listen to because I just want the Doctor to beat the living shit out of all of them. I find that level of arrogance and superstition hard to take. It's a shame because the storyline really is quite excellent.

I find it to be true in The Keeper of Traken, too. They're so frigid. It's a society that hails kindness not on a standard of openness necessarily, but an absolute standard of what that means. Which sometimes goes to extremes. It is kind of a sad thing that the melkur is a punishment rather than a circumstance of the atmosphere, but it makes it pretty fascinating to me. Though I have my moments of wishing Traken was the Nice Happy Place because the ability to be that would also be amazing. The one bit I was annoyed by, rather than finding it interesting in a rueful kind of way, was the one Traken official who went all "*shakes in boots* I for one welcome our new omniscient evil overlords," because...well, that's just pathetic to the point of farce. Silly bastard. Anyway, there's too much of that audio that is crazy awesome. XD
