I've been going through the Bernice Summerfield audios and I just listened to The Crystal of Cantus. Is anyone else listening to these? Because I am TOTALLY FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW and need someone to talk to me about this...

BRAX IS EVIL?!?! Like totally and completely and disgustingly evil?!?!? Holy fucking shit. I listened to most of that story with my mouth hanging open. I mean we always knew Brax was a scheming son of a bitch, but EVIL?! No! He...he can't be! Is it Pandora still in his head making him this way? Is it just some serious time-lord-style PTSD from the whole Fifth Axis thing? I mean what he did to that poor Ronan guy and was about to do to Jason...it's too much. It was beyond scheming bastard, it was full on EVIL.

I guess my question is, does Brax redeem himself somehow later on? Do we ever get any explanation for how he went from the questionable politician who eventually does the right thing in the Gallifrey series to the kind of amoral piece of shit who would turn his friend into a cyberleader? I just feel so thrown for a loop by the whole thing. Poor, poor Jason.

I haven't listened to the Benny audios, but I just had a read of the summaries on the Dr Who guide, and it looks like part of his long game for saving Gallifrey? Sort of like pre-emptive Time War PTSD. His actions in "Panacea" are pretty shady, too, although not on a "converting friends to Cybermen" level.

Incidentally, I think I may have been labouring under a misconception regarding the Braxiatel Collection. Is it held in a hollowed out planetoid or asteroid, or does the, um, small planetary body have an atmosphere and all that? The Gallifrey audios weren't too clear, and I hadn't realised until now that it plays such a big role in the Benny series.

Yeah, that would make sense. If you haven't listened, I don't want to spoil it TOO much, but his articulated reason for what he does in this story is that he wants to protect everyone. To protect the Collection. It's just that his chosen method for that protection is utterly disgusting and horrific. I can definitely believe he has a long game for saving Gallifrey...but good lord. The ends REALLLLLY don't justify the means in this case.

What I wouldn't pay to see a showdown between the Doctor and Brax over this. Holy CRAP, that would be amazing. For some reason I am picturing Brax with the Fifth Doctor, but I am not sure why. If I have the timelines even remotely right, wouldn't the Doc be in his Eighth body during this period?

It definitely has an atmosphere and flora and whatnot. I guess it's smallish, but they live on the surface.
