I'm utterly obsessed with Bernice Summerfield.

I know you're all terribly shocked. Anyway, in my obsession I'm listening to all of her audios ad nauseam. Including The Dark Flame. As much as I love the team of Seven, Ace, and Benny, I recognize that this story pretty much sucks. But still, it's better than NO Seven, Ace, and Benny. And I could listen to Lisa Bowerman reading Twilight and still be enthralled. Anyway, the point of this post is the following exchange that takes place after the Doctor meets up with an old friend named Remnex.

Remnex: "How is Mel?"

Doctor: "Ah, Mel. Fine, I should think. Yes! She went off to explore the universe with an itinerant con-artist."

Remnex: "No change there, then."

Come on, people. I can't be the only one who thinks that's hilarious.

::sigh::

Why couldn't BF have done more audios with these three?

Heh, especially apropos with Seven.

Right? And his laugh in response is surprisingly self-aware. It really is the highlight of an otherwise poorly written audio.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Ah yes, I just listened to that one for the first time :) It did make more sense than both Dreamtime and The Rapture (which I just listened to today), put together. Not much more. But Benny makes up for a lot.

Oh I also liked the "Doctor! What are you doing here?" "Hello, I'm currently a prisoner of the Cult of the Dark Flame" exchange.

I wish they'd make the Benny audios available as downloads. I like her quite a bit from the two Seven audios I've heard with her in them.

You make an excellent point. Those are definitely not the clearest storylines. This one makes sense, I just thinking the writing is kind of crap. Luckily, I absolutely LOOOOOOOOOOOVE Shadow of the Scourge, so it's not all bad.

I wish they'd make the Benny audios available as downloads.

I've been pretty much begging for that non-stop since BF created their forums. It drives me absolutely bat shit insane that they still haven't started. It can't possibly be that difficult and they are just losing money by not doing it! I f-ing HATE cds.

I like her quite a bit from the two Seven audios I've heard with her in them.

Then you will absolute adore her solo-line because the writing is magnificent. I'd even go so far as to say it's more consistent in quality than the main Doctor stuff. I may be slightly biased in that I worship Bernice is every possible way and find Lisa Bowerman's performance to be the greatest thing in the history of ever, but still. It's pretty damn good. ;-)

Oh, I must confess that I enjoyed "The Dark Flame," maybe only because of the interaction between the Doctor, Ace, and Benny. I suppose it stinks, but I had too much fun to care. I liked it more than "The Rapture," which managed to become my least favorite Seventh Doctor audio, due to bad music, vocal performances, and overall loudness (IMHO).

I've read that this and "The Shadow of the Scourge" didn't sell well, because audio listeners didn't want the New Adventures. I realize that the NAs were glorified fanfic, but some of them were really quite good, certainly better than many other media tie-in novels. (Sheesh. I defended them back in the day; I guess I still have to do that, but don't have the energy.)

Benny's solo audios do tempt me, hmm...

Yeah, that one did rather suck. And now that you say it, it's possible that's my least favorite as well. I think it might be the only one I've never re-listened to. Hmmm.

I've read that this and "The Shadow of the Scourge" didn't sell well, because audio listeners didn't want the New Adventures.

Then the rest of the audio listeners SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. Because I would kill for more NA-era audios. Seriously. KILL. Mostly because I'm so into that threesome and I have such a hard time getting through ANY Who-novels. I find them utterly tedious. (I know, it makes me sad too.)

Benny's solo audios do tempt me, hmm...

YES! Be tempted! Be tempted! They are SO amazing.

That exchange ROCKS. I love it when the Doctor is addressed as KIND OF A FUGITIVE. <3

I have Shadow of the Scourge, or whatever it's called, but not The Dark Flame. I'd like to hear as much as possible of Benny as an actual companion. (I'm scared of the books. I miiiight attempt Human Nature. One day.)

Then you definitely need to listen to TDF. Overall, I think it's rather weak, but it does have some brilliant exchanges and when it and SotS are all we've got, it's pretty much a must.

I'm scared of the books. I miiiight attempt Human Nature. One day.

Why are you afraid of the books? I've had trouble getting into them because I find the characterizations incredibly inconsistent and they don't have the emotional resonance that the actors provide. The one MAJOR exception to that is All Consuming Fire. That's the one where the Doctor, Ace and Benny meet up with Holmes and Watson and it is SOOOOOOOOOOOO GREAT. I couldn't have loved it more.

[identity profile] airie-fairy.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
That's why I'm scared of the books. They generally sound crap, characterwise, and I read some character bios/plot summaries and they're convoluted to the point of ridiculousness.

I WOULD LISTEN TO THE DARK FLAME IF I COULD FIND THE DAMN THING. (I like pre-listening to determine the worth of paying for them, because I really don't have the money to blow on anything and everything.)

I LESS THAN THREE BENNY TOO, if you'll pardon the capslock.

And heh about Remnex, even if I have no idea who he/she/it is.

[identity profile] elyssadc.livejournal.com 2008-11-21 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Benny love generally requires capslock. But I must object to your icon. There is no way Benny would play second-fiddle to Fritz. She'd definitely be top billing. ;-)
